Designing Out Risks

Designing Out Risks

The Issues

The world’s largest, commercial novel energy
storage system was commissioned by a large
national organisation. First in the world in scale
physically and in capacity, a review of the design from risk basis was requested by the client as the proposed design –

  • Will be the first commercially available unit at that scale of electrical storage capacity.
  • Had never been tested in the field.
  • Will be located underground, partially below the water table.
  • Will be operated for a year once commissioned to assess performance.

Successful operation of this unit will see more and larger systems being installed used for EV charging and load balancing,

TCL’s Approach to help the Client

  • Undertook a risk-based technical review of the design incorporating areas of –

  • Potential additional applicable codes to be considered for the design including insurer accepted standards.

  • Location natural perils and climate change hazards.

  • Civil and structural design considerations including breach of the underground well structure.

  • Mechanical design considerations including mechanical failures / defects, shipping and installation risks.

  • Electrical design considerations including fires sources, water impact, shipping and installation risks.

Client Outcome & Benefits

  • Avoiding the need for design rework once the unit is installed.
  • Incorporation of applicable codes to the design to improve resiliency and better practice.
  • Improved design for life safety.
  • Improved equipment resiliency and redundancy.
  • Addition of monitoring systems to aid operations and preventative maintenance.
  • Consideration of fire protection systems.
  • Improved shipping and installation protocols.
  • Improved / more detailed inspection and maintenance manuals and plans.

Structuring Risk Management

Reviewed  & challenged the Risk Management Framework against ISO 31000 Risk Management Principles.
